Sangmorakot is a name that was not on my radar when I first started looking at gyms in Bangkok. At that stage I had the obvious names in mind—Yokkao, Petchyindee, et cetera—but they all felt too modern and commercial and I was after something more traditional.

And then I came across an article about a small gym called Sangmorakot in Bangkok. Right after I read the piece I decided that I wanted to train there even though (or maybe because) I admittedly found it somewhat daunting. But hey, I do love a good challenge.

The gym seemed old school and somewhat rough, and certainly didn't seem to cater to foreigners unlike the gym I would be training at on Pha Ngan Island—but that was the experience I wanted.

Flash forward to the night before my first session. I had just arrived in Thailand full of enthusiasm and was staying in a traditional house right behind Wat Suthat, one of the most magnificent temples in Bangkok. I barely got any sleep that night due to the combination of jetlag and excitement.

I had a lot of fun and learned so much at Sangmorakot. Everyone at the gym was very welcoming—granted I did have to “prove” myself on the pads on my first day. And “Mexico” became my nickname.

Every morning I woke up at 6 a.m., took a cold shower and walked the same route to Wat Sitaram, the Buddhist temple about 20 minutes from my airbnb that is also home to Sangmorakot. That became my routine for the entire time I spent in Bangkok.

I left Sangmorakot with a sense of accomplishment after my last session there. I had just spent a week training at one of Bangkok's toughest gyms.

About a week and a half later, I bought tickets to a Muay Thai event in Chiang Mai and got talking to the promoter for a bit. When I told him I had been at Sangmorakot he gave me a look of approval and a thumbs up, and I remembered that sleepless night before my first session and smiled.
